Robbie Keane Slams Hungarian Player Quota Rule as “Crazy”
Budapest, Hungary — August 11, 2025
Ferencváros TC manager Robbie Keane has publicly criticized a new regulation in Hungarian football that mandates clubs to field at least five Hungarian players at all times during domestic matches. The rule, introduced this season by the Hungarian Football Federation (MLSZ), aims to promote local talent—but Keane believes it’s doing more harm than good.
Speaking after Ferencváros’ 4–1 win over Nyíregyháza, Keane didn’t hold back:
“It’s crazy. You’re trying to make tactical decisions, manage fatigue, and rotate the squad, but you’re constantly counting nationalities instead of focusing on football.”
The Irish manager, who took over Ferencváros last year and led them to a league title and a Europa League knockout run, emphasized the logistical strain the rule places on his team. With nearly 20 foreign players in the squad, Keane says the regulation forces him to make substitutions based on compliance rather than strategy.
“We’ve built a competitive squad with international depth. Now I have to think twice before bringing on a player who could change the game—just because of his passport.”
Debate Over Development vs. Competition
Supporters of the rule argue that it’s a necessary step to nurture Hungarian talent and ensure long-term national team success. Critics, however, say it undermines club autonomy and penalizes teams like Ferencváros that invest heavily in international recruitment.
Keane’s comments have sparked debate across Hungarian football circles, with some coaches quietly echoing his concerns. The MLSZ has yet to respond publicly.
Ferencváros in Focus
Despite the controversy, Ferencváros remain focused on their Champions League qualifying campaign. They host Armenian side FC Noah in the second leg next week, aiming to build on their 2–1 away win.
Whether the rule will be revised or reinforced remains to be seen—but Keane’s outspoken stance has certainly put it under the spotlight.
