Brian Robinson Jr. Could Be a Smart Fit for the Bears

Unlike many trade rumors that flood social media and lack feasibility, the idea of the Bears acquiring Commanders running back Brian Robinson Jr. actually makes sense—both strategically and financially.

Robinson was recently held out of Washington’s preseason matchup against the Bengals, reportedly because he’s on the trade block. With a modest $3.6 million cap hit in his contract year, he fits comfortably within Chicago’s $13.2 million cap space.

Why He Fits the Bears’ Needs

  • The Bears have been searching for a power back since the offseason. Robinson, at 6’1″ and 228 pounds, brings physicality and speed.
  • He’d complement D’Andre Swift well in Ben Johnson’s offense, serving as the bruising counterpart to Swift’s finesse.
  • Though underutilized in Washington, Robinson has posted solid rushing totals (733, 797, and 799 yards) and a career 4.1-yard average with 15 touchdowns.
  • His receiving game hasn’t been fully tapped, but he’s shown promise with averages of 10.2 and 8.0 yards per catch over the past two seasons.

Additional Perks

  • Robinson was ranked 18th out of 49 backs by PFF in his rookie year.
  • He has a connection to Bears running backs coach Eric Bieniemy, who previously coordinated Washington’s offense and helped Robinson improve his pass blocking.
  • At 26, he’s still young and wouldn’t demand a hefty trade price due to limited past production.

Chicago’s Injury Woes Make the Move Timely

The Bears’ running back room is currently depleted, with Travis Homer, Roschon Johnson, Kyle Monangai, and rookie Deion Hankins all sidelined. The remaining backs—Ian Wheeler and Brittain Brown—lack the size and power Robinson offers.

Johnson, the only similarly sized back, has struggled with injuries, including concussions and a current foot issue.

Low-Risk, High-Reward Potential

If the trade compensation is reasonable, Robinson could be a short-term solution with long-term upside. If things don’t pan out, the Bears can pivot to the draft, which is expected to feature several promising backs.

In short: Robinson is a logical, affordable, and potentially impactful addition for a team in urgent need of depth and power at running back.
