Why Nikola Jokic Turning Down an Extension Isn’t a Concern for the Nuggets
Nikola Jokic may have declined a contract extension this offseason, but the Denver Nuggets have little reason to worry about their three-time MVP.
Since claiming his first MVP award in the 2020–21 season, Jokic has elevated the Nuggets into consistent championship contention. His dominance is extraordinary, setting him apart as one of the most impactful players in NBA history.
Although he missed out on winning a fourth MVP last season, Jokic’s performance was nothing short of historic. Averaging 29.6 points, 12.7 rebounds, and 10.2 assists, he joined Russell Westbrook and Oscar Robertson as the only players to average a triple-double over a full season. Such achievements only strengthen his case as the best player in the league today.
Unsurprisingly, Denver is committed to keeping Jokic for the long term. The front office offered him a three-year, $212 million extension that would have locked him in through the 2029–30 campaign. However, Jokic chose to turn it down—sparking speculation about his future.
In reality, the move was purely strategic. Jokic remains under contract for three more years, including a $62.8 million player option for the 2027–28 season. By waiting, he positions himself to secure a larger payday: next offseason he’ll be eligible for a four-year extension worth close to $300 million, significantly more than the offer he declined.
Denver’s leadership was well aware of this possibility. Team president Josh Kroenke and his staff expected Jokic’s decision and have no concerns about his commitment. The organization fully revolves around him, and there have never been signs he intends to leave.
As ESPN’s Zach Lowe put it, no one in Denver was surprised: “It doesn’t make sense for him financially to do it this summer. Let’s revisit it next summer.” Despite coaching changes, roster adjustments, and other organizational shifts, Jokic has never hinted at wanting to play elsewhere.
While contract rejections often fuel speculation about player dissatisfaction, this situation is entirely about maximizing financial value. Jokic remains happy in Denver, and there’s no indication of tension between him and the franchise.
Simply put, Nuggets fans can relax. Their superstar center is set to sign a more lucrative deal next year, ensuring he stays in Denver well into the later stages of his career.
